It is with tremendous sadness that I pay tribute to the late John McLaughlin, who passed away recently.
John was one of the more recognisable people in Campbelltown and indeed, the wider Macarthur.
The aim in life of most people is to create positive change and leave a legacy. John certainly did that.
John was born south of the border in Brunswick but eventually chose to call Campbelltown home.
Being from Victoria he was an avid AFL fan – a Carlton support in fact.
He bought that love of AFL up to Campbelltown with him, helping found the Campbelltown AFL Club about five decades ago.
He also played a significant role in helping establish the AFL's second Sydney club, the GWS Giants.
However, there is no doubt his proudest achievement was being a father to his four children – Jamie, Matthew, Rod and Amanda.
As any parent knows, nothing in life matters more than the safety and wellbeing of your children.
It was certainly a mantra John preached.
While John may be gone, his legacy will last for many, many generations.
John, you will be missed sorely by your children, wife Jan, I and the Campbelltown community.
