The Shadow Minister for Veterans Greg Warren has criticised the Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, who ignored veterans in his Budget speech.
“I was appalled the Treasurer failed to acknowledge veterans in his address to Parliament today,” Mr Warren said; “Many veterans, particularly our seniors have done it tough during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the Treasurer couldn’t even bring himself to mutter the word ‘veteran’."
“The Office of Veterans’ Affairs (OVA) was swallowed up by the Department of Communities and Justice last year, so there are few details regarding the OVA in the budget papers,” Mr Warren said.
“To make matters worse, this Government has failed to appoint a full-time Minister for Veterans for 14 months. Geoff Lee is Acting Minister for Veterans. The Premier would never allow the Transport, Treasury or Education portfolios to be overseen by a caretaker for that long.
“The treatment of NSW veterans by this Government needs to change,” Mr Warren said, adding that the Budget snub was particularly disappointing after recent revelations that more than 70 per cent of Community War Memorial Funds in the past five years went to Coalition-held seats.
